Silk

The discovery of silk from the silkworm species Bombyx Mori occurred around 2700 B.C.  According to Chinese historians, the 14-year-old bride of the Emperor Huang Ti discovered the loose end of a silk fiber from a silkworm cocoon. The term "Silk" is derived from her name. In 139 BC, the world's longest trade route, "The Silk Road", was opened, stretching from Eastern China to the Mediterranean Sea, named after its most valuable commodity. Through this route, Silk manufacturing eventually reached Europe and America.
Silkworm is a common name for the silk-producing larvae in several species of moths. When one Asian silkworm egg, weighing only 1/30.000th of an ounce hatches, the emerging caterpillar will produce a beautiful silk thread. It had been one of the world's most valuable fibers. It is claimed strongly that silk keeps one's skin young and healthy. The beautiful and silky skin of Chinese women of all ages is concrete proof of this view.

Cashmere

What other word could be so pleasant to the ear?

It probably is the only product next to silk which has witnessed Ancient Mongolia, the Roman Empire, Victorian England and Napoleon's France. Even during those times it has always been in fashion and never out of date. The finest cashmere comes from Inner Mongolia, where the high altitude and harsh climate enables the goats to grow the finest and softest fiber under their coarse hair. This extra thin hair is called cashmere. In springtime, the cashmere is combed from each goat manually. As a result, there is very little cashmere produced each year. The annual cashmere crop is 1/100th of wool and 1/5000th of the cotton crop. It would take 4 to 5 years for a goat to produce enough cashmere for a regular sweater.

How can you differentiate good quality cashmere?

Your fingertips will tell you quite a lot... They are able to distinguish the difference of 1 micron. A human hair is about 50 microns; fine Inner Mongolian Cashmere fibers are under 16 microns. The length, texture and diameter of the fibers characterize the quality of cashmere. These quality standards are affected by the climate and the nutrients that goats consume. Inner Mongolian cashmere is regarded and accepted as the best cashmere in the world. Silk & Cashmere certifies that AAA Grade Inner Mongolian White Pure Cashmere with minimum 13-14 microns diameter and 35 mm average length is used in all Silk & Cashmere’s Pure Cashmere and Cashmere Blended products.
